We tested 8 weighted plush toys for anxiety relief: here is what actually works
The rise of weighted plush
Weighted stuffed animals have gone from niche therapeutic tool to mainstream wellness product in just two years. Searches for "weighted plush" are up 28% year-over-year, and the category generated an estimated $340 million in 2025. But with dozens of options flooding the market, which ones actually deliver? We spent four weeks testing eight of the most popular weighted plush toys to find out.
How we tested
Each plush was evaluated on five criteria: weight distribution (even vs lumpy), fabric quality, durability after washing, anxiety-relief effectiveness (based on tester feedback from a panel of 12 adults), and value for money. We also consulted Dr Sarah Chen, a clinical psychologist specialising in anxiety disorders, for her perspective on deep pressure stimulation.
"Deep pressure stimulation activates the parasympathetic nervous system, reducing cortisol and increasing serotonin. A well-designed weighted plush can provide genuine anxiety relief — but weight distribution matters more than total weight." — Dr Sarah Chen
The results
1. Weighted Jellycat Bartholomew Bear (2.1kg) — Best Overall
Price: £45 | Rating: 9.5/10
The gold standard. Jellycat's weighted version of their classic Bartholomew uses micro glass beads distributed across six internal compartments, creating the most even weight distribution in our test. The signature super-soft fur makes it genuinely comforting to hold.
2. Moon Pal Weighted Dinosaur (1.8kg) — Best Budget
Price: £22 | Rating: 8.5/10
Impressive quality for the price. The dinosaur shape means the tail acts as a natural weight anchor when placed on your lap. Machine-washable with no bead leakage after five wash cycles.
3. Squishmallows Hugmees Weighted (1.5kg)
Price: £28 | Rating: 8/10
The Hugmees elongated shape is ideal for draping across your shoulders or lap. Classic Squishmallow softness. However, the weight felt slightly concentrated in the centre.
4. Wild Baby Weighted Microwavable Bear (1.4kg)
Price: £32 | Rating: 8/10
Dual-function: weighted for pressure stimulation and microwavable for warmth therapy. The lavender-scented insert is a nice touch.
5. Warmies Weighted Sloth (1.6kg)
Price: £26 | Rating: 7.5/10
Another microwavable option with French lavender filling. The sloth's long arms wrap naturally around your neck.
6. Intelex Weighted Puppy (2.0kg)
Price: £30 | Rating: 7/10
Good weight, decent quality, but the fabric pilled noticeably after two washes.
7. Amazon Basics Weighted Bear (1.3kg)
Price: £15 | Rating: 6/10
Acceptable as a budget option but the fabric feels thin and the weight beads shift easily.
8. Target Pillowfort Weighted Cat (1.2kg)
Price: £18 | Rating: 5.5/10
The lightest in our test. At 1.2kg, it falls below the 1.5kg threshold experts recommend for effective adult deep pressure stimulation.
The verdict
If budget allows, the Weighted Jellycat Bartholomew is in a class of its own. For value seekers, the Moon Pal Dinosaur delivers 90% of the experience at half the price. Avoid anything under 1.5kg if you are an adult seeking genuine anxiety relief.
